The recycling of precious metals, e.g. platinum, is an essential aspect of sustainability for the modern industry. However, as a result of its resistance to corrosion, the currently used techniques rely on costly and hazardous processes. Due to these limitations an alternative Pt-leaching technique was developed termed “induced surface potential alteration (ISPA)”. Working in a non-toxic acidic aqueous environment and at room temperature, the recycling concept is based on a repetitive change in the Pt surface oxidation state utilizing alternatively oxidative and reductive gases. Since the concept has proven its efficiency at the laboratory scale we are currently concentrating on a scale up towards the capacities of a pilot plant.
