Selectivity of Electrocatalysts

Ethylene can be considered the most highly produced organic feedstock in the chemical industry. It is used for the production of large amounts of higher polymers, such as polyethylene, as well as applications in the food industry. By today, it is to a high extent produced by steamcracking of different fossil gases. In order to become independent of such unrenewable sources, it is important to unravel new reaction pathways based on renewable energy sources. In the last decades, ethylene formation by electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 has gained huge interest from an industrial and a scientific point of view. Copper is a highly active catalyst for the electroreduction of CO2, but still there is a lot of room for optimizations.
My research is embedded in the work of the selectivity-group of the HI ERN and focuses on the investigation of possible future catalytic materials and the characterization of suchlike to hopefully contribute to an efficient CO2 to ethylene catalysis.
