Electrocatalysis
The research interests of the research department are on electrochemical reactions that occur at solid-liquid interfaces and are relevant to electrochemical energy conversion (fuel cells, water or CO2 electrolyzers etc).

The Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN) is pleased to announce an extraordinary scientific success: all three directors of the institute have recently achieved an h-index of over 100 - clear evidence of the outstanding productivity and international influence of their research and that of their teams at the HI ERN.
The h-index is a parameter that takes into account both the number of publications and their citation frequency. An h-index of 100 means that a scientist has published at least 100 publications, each of which has been cited at least 100 times - a rare milestone in the international research landscape.
Founding Director Prof. Peter Wasserscheid currently has an h-index of 110 according to Google Scholar, Prof. Christoph Brabec has an h-index of 158 (also "highly cited researcher") and Managing Director Prof. Karl Mayrhofer recently completed the outstanding trio with an h-index of exactly 100.
These figures impressively reflect the extent to which the HI ERN's research is received worldwide - and how the institute sets standards with its expertise in the fields of renewable energies, energy storage and sustainable technologies.
