MSc Project Proposal: Spatial and Predictive Modeling for PV Module Waste Management: Optimal Strategies for Reuse and Recycling in Brazil and Germany

Background and Motivation

A recent study led by Dr. Rong Deng at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, proposed a national model for managing end-of-life (EoL) photovoltaic (PV) modules. The project utilized geospatial modeling, waste volume forecasting, and logistic optimization to determine the ideal locations for large-scale PV waste treatment facilities. It also classified regions according to the urgency of waste management needs.

Inspired by this approach, the current project seeks to apply similar data-driven techniques to model PV module waste flows and propose optimized strategies for both recycling and reuse — considering social, economic, and technical dimensions — in Brazil and Germany.
