Good connection: Universitätsbund Erlangen-Nürnberg visited HI ERN

Erlangen, May 8, 2023 - Sustainable energy technologies in focus: Around 100 participants of the Universitätsbund Erlangen-Nürnberg e.V. took the opportunity to gain a direct insight into the research work of HI ERN, which is important for the global energy transition.

After the general welcome by former mayor of the city of Erlangen Prof. Siegfried Balleis, institute director Prof. Karl Mayrhofer gave the interested guests an overview of the current state of the energy transition with reference to the institute's research focus in the field of photovoltaics and hydrogen as a secondary energy carrier. Increasing efficiency as well as reducing costs through innovative materials and process research will continue to be a central component of progress in both areas over the coming years.

Another focus is the training of top performers who actively transfer the latest knowledge to the private sector. With over 40 doctoral students per year, the institute is already making a significant contribution to regional and national innovation in the field of renewable energy.

During the tour of the modern laboratories in the new research building, the participants were then able to gain an impression of the state-of-the-art infrastructure of the institute, which was built with the support of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. More than 180 scientists are now working at six locations in the region to develop a climate-friendly, sustainable and affordable energy supply for future generations.

The visit of around 100 guests from science, business and politics took place as part of the "Members only" event series of the Universitätsbund Erlangen-Nürnberg e.V.. The Universitätsbund is an association of friends and supporters of the Friedrich Alexander Universität (FAU), a close cooperation partner of HI ERN.
